Our Windows 2000 Web Server was being terribly slow and wouldn't shut down or restart. Our only option was to switch it off and on again - but it wouldn't start-up.
It gets to the 'starting windows' screen then says "Windows 2000 could not start because C:\winnt\system32\config\SYSTEMced is misssing or corrupt. We've tried to use the repair console on the 2000 CD but it says it can't locate the installation of Windows 2000. We found a message on the web saying that while in Recovery Console (which we CAN get to) we should do the following...

cd system32\config
ren system system.old
ren system.alt systemalt.old

and then copy repair\regback\system to system32\Config.
Does anyone think this will fix it? (And not break it even more) . Nothing has recently been changed on the server (honestly!) although it probably hasn't been restarted for weeks.

Sorry if I haven't given enough information - Windows isn't my strong point.

Thanks for any help you can give
Sarah

I have had this error several times. If you have run the emergency recovery disk from the backup option then the solution you suggested does work. The problem is caused by the registry growing so that it is too big to boot.SP3 for win2000 is suppose to fix this problem. If you do not have an upto date ERD then your solution will restore the default windows configuration which should be give you the option to backup your data

hope this helps
