Background:
Running Dell XPS Gen 4, Windows XP SP2. Loaded too many resident spyware programs (e.g., Ad-aware Paid, Sbybot with TeaTimer, SpySweeper, WinPatrol, BHO, and more). One day these had a war when I logged in. The outcome was they deleted the Links key in the registry. All exe and shortcut links got lost. Had to have 2 techs rebuild the registry over a 9 hr period. They also reinstalled XP and SP2 from the OEM recovery disk. This solved the linking problem. Lesson learned...don't run competing resident spyware apps.
Problem:
Two residual problems appeared after that registry crash and recovery:
(1) The system tray is partially inoperative. It does not show all the usual icons of startup processes. It has no expansion indicators. Example of things not present are the "Safely remove devised" and the double computer icon indicating my dial-up connection. How can I restore the system tray to normal function?
(2) My dial-up connection can only be shut down (disconected)by rebooting the system. Right clicking the Dial-up desktop icon always shows "Connected"..the ""Disconnect" option does not appear when it is connected, as it should. Cannot disconnect from Network Connections Control Panel either. Maybe these are related problems. I used to disconnect a dialup using the system tray icon, which does not show up. Incidentally, I removed and reinstalled the dial-up connection. Any hints, or send best offer for a newly broken, costly, recent Dell super system. Laughs.
Postscript.
I am threading this twice, one under each problem.
Lesson learned...free Ad-aware Personal (without Ad-Watch resident) and free Spybot S&D loading Immunize component only seem to be totally adequate and a safe combo for safe spyware guarding and elimination. At least my techs vouch this, and it has worked for me since my spyware wars.
