The other possibility is that somewhere you have the dreaded "Hattenschweiler" font installed for another app.
This is a known bug (known by Microsoft) and has something to do with that particular font not being included in '97.
(This happened to me when I installed Access 97 over Office 2000). To fix, do "Search" from the "Start" button in the tool tray for either that name, or "Hatten". When you find out where the heck your machine has stashed it, rename it.
Then reboot (don't know if reSTART will do it). Go ahead and reinstall Access. If the problem goes away, cool! If not, wrong fix. I never bothered reinstalling the font afterwards, but I suppose you could try. It isn't one of the neat ones anyway!
