I am using ARCserve v.9. In the tree to select what directories to backup, there is a box for the registry. There is also a box for the System State, and when I expand that option, the registry is found there as well. Is it redundant to backup the registry in both places?

By default, the registry is not backed up as a seperate session, but as part of session 1. To enable the registry to be backed up as a seperate session, start server admin, click on the job engine tab, then configuration button. Select the 'Backup registry key details when an entire machine is selected' check box to backup the registry as a seperate session.

The system state can only be restored in its entirety, ie you cannot select a single hive to restore as you could with a registry backup. This is predominantly used to restore a server as part of active directory.

Well when I look at Restore By Session System State doesn't even show, but it does let me choose it when I do the backup, and yup it is a DC... Ideass???

The System State backup of the registry is backing up the \WINNT\System32\Config directory where the *.dat and event log files are stored.
The registry in the backup view is for HKLM and HKU hives and is a key level backup. The only advantage in backing this up is if you wanted to restore individual keys

When I look at restore by session I can't see a "System State" Session. I can see a C:\ & & Registry sessions but no system state. Obviously if I can't see a system state session I can't restore AD to the DC :(

Check the Help file on System State restore. This is what the BEB Help says:
There are two ways to restore the Active Directory, authoritative and non-authoritative. The default restoration of the Active Directory is non-authoritative. If an authoritative restore is preferred, BrightStor EB has an option to handle it automatically. To invoke this functionality, right-click in the System State session and choose Option. The System State Restore Options dialog appears. Select the check box Make the Restored Copy of the Active Directory Authoritative to make the Active Directory restore authoritative. Your system must be rebooted after the restore job finishes.

Apparently its a problem with Arcserve needs sp9.01, will try that. Its defintely a bug.
