After upgrading to IE6sp1 on a Compaq Evo N610c running
Windows 2000 Pro SP4, the system sounds stop. It's like
the mute box has been selected. This is the second N610c
this has done this on.
Once system sounds stop working, you can go to the Control
Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia and you won't be able to
play any of the assigned system sounds. In fact, when you
hit the button to hear a sample, the button will never
revert back from the "stop" state.
If you catch it in time, you can close IE6 and the system
sounds will return. If you don't, you have to log off to
get the sounds back. During all this time, you can still
open up the SoundMax applet in the Control Panel and play
all the test sounds you want and they will play without
problem.
Any ideas on this? I ran the second Evo for three days
with IE5.0 without a hitch. Ten minutes after applying
IE6sp1, the problem started up.
