I just upgraded a laptop from Windows 98se to Windows XP Pro. Had a few problems but I have got most of them solved.

There is one that I can’t seam to solve. I have no System Restore functions. There is no System Restore Tab even loged in as Administrator. There is no System Restore Service in the Services List. Not having the Service running is the problem. Does anyone know how I can reinstall this service or get it running?

Linney covers most of the MS KB articles in this thread: thread779-855665

About a year ago there was a thread that covered just about every possibility for the tab to be missing: thread779-596023

bcastners,
Thanks for responding!
That was quite a Link! It shows that this is not a miner problem. But I was able to solve it by doing a lot of research here and on the Web. I will not go into how this problem started. That’s a subject for another time. I will tell you and others how I solved it as I hope it will help others if they get this problem (No System Restore) So, here goes.

1. Boot XP as Administrator
2. Unhide system files and folders.
3. Rename the C: Volume. Give it a name different then what it has now. Just put a “1” at the end of the name
4. Look for a folder with the name “System Volume Information” in the “Root” of the renamed Volume. IF NOT THERE create it.
5. Navigate to “Root” \Windows\INF and find a file named “sr.inf”. Right Click on it and select install. Follow the install directions. You may need your SP1 disk or your Windows XP disk if SP1 is incorporated in it.
6. RUN pledit (The Policy Editor). Under Administrator Service look for “System Recovery” and in the right pain Disable both references to “Lock Out System Recovery” or something like that.
7. After Completed reboot the system and you should find the System Recovery Tab is back.
8. Run System Recovery Wizard to setup Recovery Points.

This worked for me I hope it will help!
