A customer brought her computer in with a blue screen error. I rebooted and ran chkdsk -r in the recovery console and it had repaired numerous things. I rebooted the computer and no more blue screen, but it gets stuck at the windows logo screen (not the big logo with the progress bar, the little one just before the login screen. I can't do a system restore because I cannot log into windows normally or in safe mode. I almost 100% positive that either the registry is corrupt or that there is some driver errors as a result of the hard drive messing up. So I guess my question is, is there any backdoor way to do a system restore? Any help is appreciated.

I've received numerous reports of this today. Seems like it started yesterday. Maybe a bad Windows Update or a virus?

try using BartPE

and look for a system restore plugin. Most seem to do only registry restores, but may be worth a try.

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."

I have a multi-boot recovery cd. I will try ERD Commander and see if that works. I will post back with any luck

did you try fixmbr from the recovery console

I tried FIXMBR. No help. Still get the black screen after the Windows XP logo screen both in Regular and Safe modes.
I've now checked 3 PCs and all pass hardware diagnostics. All report that this problem started yesterday.

ERD Commander has a System Restore option that works great. Unfortunately, in this case, system restore couldn't even fix it... But, it did successfully restore the registry back to a usable state, which was some of the problem of it not booting. After that, I just did a repair install through the XP installation cd and viola! Back in business

...Also, FIXMBR won't work if the master boot record is still intact. If you see a Windows screen, then that command won't do a thing. U can try chkdsk -r and repair any and all bad sectors first and see if that works. If it doesn't follow the steps I just layed out and you should be on your way...
