Server 2003 makes "system restore" folders like xp. Where is the system restore option?

I recently had a server 2003 installation go bad; the "software" file in the windows/system32/config directory went bad. I copied it from the "repair" directory, but this is the one from way back when we first installed the OS. Nothing works. For that matter, its even making new user directories when people log in, so they lost everything too. (we can copy documents from their old directories, but we want settings, caches, etc working right)
As is, we've recovered nothing by fixing the windows this way.
If there's a recent copy of "software" in the system restore folder, that would be a lifesaver, but I can't find it.

so i assume you havent been backing it up?

if you have shadow copies enabled then you will get some data back that way - posibly but only if it is enabled and it normally defaults to about 10%

i'm confused when you say installation gone bad - i assume you dont mean when installing it - server been in for a while and then you got a promblem - you need to expand
