system restore failure

each time i reboot my pc (windows ME) it gets stuck and i have this message on screen:
Msgsrv32 has caused an error in KERNEL386.EXE. Msgsrv32 will close now.i you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer.

When I click on the close icon that appears with this message the PC freezes and nothing happens. IWhen I restart it, it goes through the same process again. can you please help.

do you mean you tried system restore?

what's the background to this problem (ie, how did it start, any changes you made to hardware/software etc).

If you have the Windows ME CD handy, you could try a restore install. If not, what happens when you attempt to boot into safe mode?
