I have a Windows XP configured on my system. It gets restarted automatically on random times say after 45 mins or one hour. I tried running chkdsk. still the problem persists. Could any one give a solution for the problem? Thanks.

I would try some of these things:

First,

Try sfc/scannow at the start run and have your XP Cd ready...

Also it may be virus related run your virus scanner and make sure it's up to date and also...

You can have look here at spyware issues possibly:

Download that version and it should work when you uninstall the version you have and install this one.

Hope this helps,

Erik

It could also be hardware related, e.g. overheating, failing memory or failing/under-rated power supply - all of which can cause random re-boots if 'System Failure' is left on the default 'Automatically restart' setting.

Is there any information in Event Viewer's 'System' log that may give a clue to the problem? (Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer)

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

I would try what linney mentions above. I have had a few machines at work recently begin doing this and everytime it was a bad hard drive.
