Hi all, I've got a Netscreen 5 firewall and am looking for a way to do a hardware reset of the entire system. Cannot log into the console and there is no reset button to blank the flash. I took the box apart and there are a number of jumpers on the motherboard but can't find anything about how to reset these without having to send it back to the manufacturer.

Thanks

Try connecting to the device via the console port. login using the serial number as the name and password. This should reset everything to factory defaults I believe.

I can't try using the serial number since I never get a chance to login. Either it is set for FIPS mode and I can't connect to the console. I can do a tftp reload to it though, does anyone have a default or blank boot file that I could load into so I can reset everything? I think part of the problem is that I loaded a 5XP FIPS flash file into it and it errors out now.

Here's what I get right now;
Serial Number [--------]: READ ONLY
Control Number [00000000]: READ ONLY
HW Version Number [2010]: READ ONLY
Self MAC Address [0010.----.----]: READ ONLY
Self IP Address [192.168.1.1]:
TFTP IP Address [192.168.1.5]:
Boot File Name: [ns5xp.2.6.1-FIPS]
tftp: load ns5xp.2.6.1-FIPS from 192.168.1.5
tftp malloc: 4e89d4
r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.r.
### Sys Warning: tftp timeout max!

Thanks
Mick

I have a Netscreen 5XP, and have inadvertently installed the latest screenOS without following the upgrade paths :-(

I have tried resetting it using the reset pin-hole, but am unable to connect to it - can't even ping the trusted port by it's default address (192.168.1.1).

Is there anything else I can do to reset it and do the job properly?

Thanks.

To KEVD regarding NetScreen:

Kevd,
After your netscreen box came back it will default to 192.168.1.1 ip address. To be able to access it, you have to assign you the IP to your NIC to be within the same network. For example, 192.168.1.2 <---notice the last octate.

Hope this helps.

P.S: I am struggling with NetScreen 25 myself.

Thanks, I tried resetting it by pressing in the reset button, but that had no effect. So, I connected to it via the console, set up tftp on the machine I was working on, and loaded the 4.0.0r1.0 netscreenOS. I then reset it via the pin-hole reset button, and I was able to access it and load the rest of the updates in the correct order via the webGUI.
