System Requirements test.

Well I'm going to be trying this out, but the only machine I can install int onto doesn't quite meet the requirements.

If only because it doesn't have 1GB RAM but only 756MB.

Having lots of experience with Windows OSes I know Microsoft tends to over estimate their requirements.

So I'm thinking it should probably run o.k in that amount of RAM. Maybe I'll have to disable some features but otherwise it should be o.k, if maybe a tad slow.

Anybody think it shouldn't? Or wouldn't? and Why?

If you can get past the install check then it should work fine if a little bit slower than it could run. If there is a check of the amount of RAM in the system then you may fail to install it - I've not checked whether it will let you install it with that much RAM.

Yea, hopefully it doesn't check to see if there's enough RAM.

Or if it does it will just warn you instead of halting the entire thing.

In the event that it does halt, guess I'll have to look into buying RAM for that machine.

Either way, the system requirements say 1GB so can you post back to say if 768MB gets you through the install?

If you were able to run Vista (ever) on that machine then I suspect that Windows 7 will be similar. I was able to run Vista on an old slow machine (2000 vintage) with only 500 MB of Ram.

In the absence of any such Windows 7 animal you could try the Vista Upgrade Advisor?

Still I prefer the try it and find out method rather than any advisor.

That machine has always been XP. No Vista ever came near it.

Still it'll be fun to try out.

Hopefully the W7 download will be done before the end of the day, and I can give it a whirl tonight at home.

Well, I am test installing it (64bit) now on a VM with 768MB RAM, and it did not hick-up at all...

so it might even go with 756MB (32mb onboard graphics eh?)...

I've got an older 32 bit system running with only 512MB and it runs surprisingly well.

Excellent 0 so the bottom line seems to be that 1GB is recommended but so far we've discovered you can successfully install it with only 512MB RAM.

As with all OS's you may well be able to run with 512mb but then fire up a hefty app and go make a cup of tea

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."

Or fire up 3 or 4 Medium apps, have the tea, then press reset.

I have installed this on a laptop with 512mb of memory and only 32mb graphics card.

With Vista, I had to turn off all visual performance enhancements, just to get it to respond in time to make it usable.

With 7, it's quicker with all the enhancements turned on, than Vista with them turned off!

Looking good so far...

Unfortunately I wasn't able to complete the install.

nothing to do with the memory though. Just the fact that the installation could not create a system partition on the drive I pointed it to.

Turns out the drive had quite a few bad sectors. So I'm in
the process of getting a different drive to test this on.

I will say this though, the install is surprisingly quick to get started. Unlike XP's setup, which takes over a minute to load stuff, this one was up and waiting for me to select a drive within 30 to 40 seconds. Or at least it seemed to me it was.

I think that the performance gains (as compared with Vista) are probably more noticeable on low-end or older systems. I ran Vista on the same hardware and it was definately not that fast. However, running in equivalent VPC's on a higher end system, I don't really notice any difference.

Finally got this set-up. Had to wrestle with the Wirelees Network card a bit. But I'm now proud to say I'm writitng ths form the new Windows 7 install.

I really can't say I've delved into Vista much. Other tha the casual use here and there. I've mostly remained with Xp at home and the office. So most of this is new to me.

But so far it looks good. A couple things will take a little getting used to.

Anyway it seems to be running o.k with 768MB. Sometimes I can feel it a little slowish, but otherwise its pretty good. I'm sure with 1Gb of ram this would be smoother.

Try boot and nuke before you write off this drive had the same issue when I had Linux installed on a drive. I could format it, but not full format. Windows reported the same issue.
Nuked it and been fine since (as was linux on it)

I have it running and it uses between 400 and 600 MB memory

So it should not be a problem

On a fresh install for me it uses 858mb ram according to the task manager.
So I'd say 1gb is probably recommended, 512 min.
But ofc, minimum doesn't always mean minimum.
It will run choppy but still doable
