Hello

I am running Arcserve version 9 on a Windows 2000 Server with Windows Service Pack 4.

For no apparent reason full overnight backups are suddenly failing. I am getting Backup Operation failed messages in the Activity Log. I also see "1828 System Protected File(s) skipped (use System State)" errors in the log.

The backup seems to start OK and does the file estimate. Ther last time I ran the full backup job the log said that it had processed 24.04 Mb of files and then failed.

The backup has worked perfectly for months but has suddenly started erroring. I have made no changes to the overnight backup job.

I have formatted the tape without problems and I have run several different back ups of data files only to the tape without problems.

However the full overnight backup job backs up the System state and the registry. It seems that if I include these items in a backup job then the job crashes.

Data files back up OK but system files seem to crash the back up.

I have rebooted the Server bur the problem still persists.

All of the applications that run on the Server apart from Arcserve seem to run OK.

Any help that you could offer will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Jules

1828 System Protected File(s) skipped (use System State)

This is no error message. This 1828 files be backuped in the system state you selected as source because the files a Windows program files and part of the system state.

Under the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ComputerAssociates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\Base\Task\Common

set please this:
Value name: ErrorLevel
Data type: REG_DWORD
Data: 4

You will get more details in the activity log. Hope you will see then a error and can fix it.

Thanks for the info.

I take it this registry edit will turn on debug.

As far as I can see there are no service packs applied to Arcserve.

I wll see what the log looks like after the registry is updated

The registry setting puts the Job Engine in debug. Using the ARCserve Server Admin to do it sets it to debug level 2.

I have found that the Server had a problem with the RAID disks. I have replaced one of them. And now the problem with the backup has gone away

Although the file system seemed intact and users could access their data normally, the faulty disk seemed to prevent Arcserve from running satisfactorily.

Anyway, the problem is now solved.

Thanks for all your help.
