Hi, yesterday I made a Live Update of Norton Utilities and then when the computer made the restart a error appear. The error is that the file windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt and then it tells that go to the Windows repair. When I go to the Windows XP repair page it sending me like a recovery console like a command prompt.

I check the directory and the file is in there

I dont know how to change or repair that file

Thank you

Some things to look at here. But you might as well try the easy options first. Try using System Restore to get back to before that update.

Go into Safe Mode and see if selecting "last known good configuration" helps you.

Try using the System File Checker program from the Run Box (sfc /scannow).

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry that Prevents Windows XP from Starting (Q307545)

If no luck with above you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

REPAIR WINDOWS

Boot from XP CD
(Windows will now load some temporary files)

Options after booting

*To Set Up Windows XP now press ENTER

*To Repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R

*To Quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3

Press ENTER for first option (don't select Recovery Console)
(Accept Eula agreement)

Follow onscreen instructions to repair windows installation

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

I have the same problem with the file windows\system32\config\system

However, I cannot boot into safe mode or last known good conf. due to that file being corrupt.

I cannot use winXP CD to boot and choose install-F8 because it does not give me a R=Repair choise after that.

I cannot replace the file with this one: windows\repair\system , because it crashes/restarts during starting winXP

Any other suggestion before reinstalling?

actually a friend of mine already gave me this link that saved me:

It is probably the one that you wanted to point to.

It seems that you have to replace 5 files (system, software, sam, security & default) in order to get winXP working, instead of just "system" in win2k.

Now I switched to my last RP and I am back as new !!!
