Hello All,

I have a new MacBook Pro that I have just attached to a Viewsonic VX2025wm display panel via DVI.

After connecting the monitor and booting, I opened System Preferences > Display. I configured the upper monitor to 1680 X 1050 and left the MacBook Pro display at 1440 X 900 (of course) The Arrangment has the Viewsonic monitor ABOVE the MacBook (not sure if that matters but I'm being descriptive)

The next thing I did was to go into System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver and set a new wallpaper for the viewsonic monitor. The new wallpaper was set with no issue. When I tried to change it to another wallpaper, System Preferences quit. I reopened Desktop & Screen Saver and the moment I clicked on ANYTHING within the window (whether it be an Icon, scrollbar, the edge) System Preferences will immediately quit. I rebooted the system but the problem remains. The wallpaper I set for the Viewsonic monitor is still in place but I have no way of changing it.

I'm running 10.4.8

I can't say that I have. I'm a still a switcher noob when it comes to Macs. If this were Windows I would have already loaded this up in a debugger ;)

Can you point me in the right direction for repairing disk permissions? thx

Open the finder, go into Applications/Utilities and look for the Disk Utility. In there you should see buttons to Repair Disk Permissions.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

There were disk permission issues, and the Disk Utility successfully fixed them. However, unfortunately, that didn't resolve the issue.

Still, thanks for the heads up about the Disk Utility.

Sometimes errors cant be fixed because your root drive is mounted and you dont have permission.

Try this (just to be 100% sure)

1) Toss in your OSX install disk

2) Restart your box while holding the C key down

3) When your computer is fully booted from the Disk choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu
(If its OSX 10.4 disk you will need to pick your Language before you can do Step 3)
**IMPORTANT** DONT hit Continue on the first screen of the install-If you do just restart your machine and start over.

4)Click the First Aid Tab

5) Click the Disclosure triangle to the left of the drive icon to display the names of your disk volumes and partitions.

6) Select your OSX Volume

7) Click Repair

8) Restart machine when Disk Utility is done

See if that does anything for you

I'll give it a shot tonight.

BTW, I created a new account with admin rights but was not able to replicate the issue.

I also deleted the desktop and screen saver preferences from the \username\library\caches and deleted the Desktop folder. I then went into the caches\preferences and deleted the destop and screensaver preference files.

I rebooted and got a generic desktop as expected. I was able to change wallpapers but when I went into my pictures folder for wallpapers I was only able to change it once and it crashed again.

This has something to do with which folder I use for my wallpapers. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with OSX debugging as I am with Windows debugging.

You might try trashing user/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4
