Upgraded a 300GL (IBM) from Win95 (came with the system)to Win98SE, retail version. Upgrade went as expected, until the final reboot. The Win98 logo screen comes up, and after about 20 seconds, the little scrolling bar at the botton of the logo stops. Can't <Cntl><Alt><Del>. The power button does NOT even respond. I rebooted by pulling the plug, then force the 300GL into safe mode. It came up fine. It must be a hardware conflict with one of the drivers. Any suggestions on what to check.

Note:
I have not tried this, but I now understand that holding the power button for 4-6 seconds will power down the system. Will confirm.

Most newer computers, PII and above, you do have to hold the power button down 4 seconds or so. It can be set in the bios however to "instant off". "Soft power off" is the delayed mode. As far as it locking up in normal mode try removing all of the adapter cards (sound, modem, & etc.) and booting up without them. You may have a conflict with a driver from the upgrade. If it boots up with all of the cards out in normal mode, insert them one at a time. When it locks up again you'll know which card your having problems with. You should be able to download a more compatable driver if this is you problem.
