I've got an Epox MVP-3 mobo running a 500mhz K6-2. Yesterday, it started locking up during the boot process. It gets through the POST fine, passes the memory test, does the drive test, all fine.

It locks while initializing the PnP modem and sound card.

Any ideas?

Hi
Start the system in safe mode.. Remove the Modem and sound drivers. Shut down and restart.. Then dont install the drivers for both.. keep pressing cancel
for sound card and next.. next for modem. i.e. to say.. install only one device driver at a time. After the system starts.., After completion of one device setup.. install the drivers for the other device. This way conlicts can be minimised. Installing modem drier first is recommended.. otherwise.. the system could freeze with some modem types.

The system never loads, so I can't start in safe mode, remove drivers, etc. Right now the only thing I can edit are BIOS settings.

I've been using the card and modem for several years, so it seems unlikely that there is a driver conflict.

Remove the modem and sound card boot up and see if it makes it to windows. If it does shutdown and add in one card if it does not boot try the other and see if it boots. Shut down and add the other if no boot that one is most likely toast. If it boots then I would suspect bad connection.

MAke sure your BIOS and your windows are not detecting PnP at the same time this will cause a problem. the only thing you should have set is your o/s to detect plug and play settings

Any recent changes, additions, etc? Try resetting the BIOS to "Setup Defaults". Try completely clearing the BIOS with the CLEAR CMOS jumper or remove the battery (you'll lose all your current settings, so make a note of them before doing this if they're important). If removing the soundcard and modem as suggested above doesn't work, try disconnecting the hard drive and any other peripherals.

Good luck!

Try disabling the memory cache. Try both internal and external combinations.
