System keeps trying to run video files it 16 bit mode!

Can anyone help?
I can't run any video files at all, and we know how important they are to my work :)
The error message says "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" and I can choose close or ignore.
How do I get it to open in 32 bit mode?
