Hi recently i tried to do a Windows XP repair. I'm going to use these steps for better example for my problem.

What happened was before part 4 and before i continued to install windows (pressing ok to continue installation etc). My whole house lost power for a few seconds.. i really don't know why but this does happens once in awhile.

So i restarted my computer to finish installing windows. Now this is where my problems start. After the Windows loading screen i get a message box saying "System is not fully installed. Please run the setup again" and my computer reboots.

Now i did try to the run setup again and after the part "Setup will now inspect your computer hardware and configuration", i get messages saying like "The file acpi.sys could not be found" (I get some other files and also error codes too). Press any key to continue. Then the installation wont continue and reboots. This keeps happening when i try to the run setup. I tried several times doing this and keep getting the same problems.

Is there some other way to continue the Windows XP Repair without formatting and losing my DATA. I would also like to know if i can use this as a slave HDD with the problem still there meaning no OS and still access my data with another HDD as master with a OS installed (I'm planning to use an PCI controller card). My motherboard is a Gigabyte 8VM533M-RZ (which is an IDE board), with a Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.8GHz and Windows XP home edition as my Operating system.

I Would really appreciate to get some help to fix this problem. Many thanks in advance

NOTE: since this is a duplicate post I have Red-Flagged the second post, it will be deleted, so let's keep our comments to one post (this one!).

Sounds like there was some damage to the XP CD or the optical drive during the blackout. Examine the CD and see if it is scratched, etc. What I have done with success in this situation is to clean the disc and try again, or copy the disk and try loading fro the copy. I don't know why, but MS CDs are extremely fragile, the first thing I do when I get a new MS system disc is make a backup copy or two.

If you can't run an In-place installk (repair) with that CD, you probably won't be able to do a full install.

Worst case you can hook up your HDD to another PC or run a Live Linux CD to pull off all the data, but it really shouldn't be anything other than a CD or CD-ROM problem, although the PSU is a remote suspect if it's not providing proper power to the system due to damage from the blackout.

I will take this opportunity to recommend a small UPS for your system (like a small APC, Tripp-Lite or CyberPower unit, <$50US) to avoid this happening in the future. What if you were doing a BIOS flash??? [bomb]

Hi sorry for this late reply. But i just want to thank you for your reply, the info you gave me seem to make sense and also the tips seem very helpful. I'm not really sure what a bios flash is but i don't think i was doing that anyway.

And sorry for the duplicate post i didn't mean to post two threads up. I didn't see the thread up after i submitted it, maybe it was lag :). Thanks again for your help.

A BIOS flash is a re-load of the firmware of your motherboard, and once it starts it must finish. If it's interrupted for whatever reason, it can leave you with a useless pile of chips, as in your motherboard being dead, useless, sometimes beyond repair other than changing the CMOS chip. So, it's a good reason to own a battery backup. I doubt if you did one, because it's usually a separate, convoluted procedure that's hard to do by accident.

Anyways, keep us posted as to your progress. Try the recommended solutions and see what happens. And don't worry about the duplicate post...it was obviously an accident. Best of luck!
