Hi,

I found that system.ini file is corrupted in my windows 98 se.

I had this problem

This program has performed a illegal operation. It will shut down.

By using clean boot troubleshooting method suggested by microsoft knowledge base article, I found that system.ini file.

i couldnt find in detail which file has got affected.

there is way to replace the system.ini file by good copy.

i have the original cd...i couldnt find system.ini file in the cd.

thank you.

Hi,

Problem i dont see any copy which they have specified..

copy which is present is systems.1st

i guess this original system.ini file which was backed up durning installation.

user has installed many softwares and drivers after that..

if go back to original..many of programs will get affected...

how to prevent that to happen...

thank you

just reinstall Windows on top of itself - use a floppy startup disk ( the 98 CDROM.
Boot with floppy in drive and choose "start with cdrom support" - from A:\> change to
E:\ then
CD WIN98
if you see this --> E:\WIN98 (if prob. try F:\)
type SETUP
Install Windows into C:\WINDOWS when prompted to (to overwrite the orig Windows folder), don't let it install into WINDOWS.000 or similar.
You won't lose all data and programs, but you'll have to reinstall most Apps to fix the REG entries and broken shortcuts....you'll lose all previous System folder data such as Favorites, Fonts, Desktop and My Documents, etc.

If you have a prob with 'detected a version already, can't install'...then you'll need to rename or delete the win.com file in \WINDOWS folder to something else

or you may want to try the System.1st rename game, which should start you off at the point all the way after the 1st or 2nd reboot that's usual during a standard install - at the "hardware detection" phase.

should always backup, now you see why

You can restore a known good copy of the registry - which includes system.ini by running scanreg /restore from a dos prompt (boot the machine to dos, either by pressing F8 or Ctrl key as windows is about to start to get menu - then select dos prompt option or by booting from 98 boot floppy). Scanreg will display a list of dates it has registry copies from - select the latest one which is before the problem started.

(system.ini is generated from your setup - its not 'standard' - its really a hangover from windows 3.1).

wolluf is correct - Try it FIRST - i remembered to write it as a choice -- but then forgot by the time I got to the end of writing...I also thought it 'may' be a bit late for that, but worth a shot definitely, as long as you find a "started" copy the predates the prob when you do it.
from a DOS prompt C:\
type in scanreg /restore (notice the blank space between [g] and [/])
hit Enter
I don't know where my head is today...thanks for the catch wolluf
