Running a very heavy query the CPU of my computer swichs to a rate of
- System Idle Process of 80 %
- Ms Access 20%

System Idle Process is explaned as "System Process not in use or operation". So why he takes so much memory ?
You can't delete this task in your dialog screen tasks.

Can a user influence these 80-20. Or is the System Idle Process inevitable ?

The more the system is idle, the more the CPU is AVAILABLE for other processes ...

Hope This Helps, PH.

Available ?

When I have a little query the System Idle Process is little (2%) but execution of access is fast. When I try to run a heavy query he swiths to System Idle Process 80% an 20% Ms Access. Even after a weekend with 20% the query is not completed.

How are ya matrixindicator . . .

There are many other considerations to account for when considering resources and processor usage/Idle times.

Background Processes (Antivirus, Spam, FireWalls, Auto Downloading Email, hard disk formatting, memory intensive routines . . . ect). They all share the same processor making any view of processor usage/Idle times quite ambiguous. Add to that priorities assigned to processes by windows. You'd have to have to stop all other processes save access to know for sure.

If your looking for better performance out of access look there first. There are site references for this but I'm at work and can't supply them at this time.

So what is the problem with Access?

The problem is more likely a poorly written SQL or a poorly designed database ...

Got to agree with PHV, that sentence worried me when I read it.

Yeah, if something is not working properly a common answer is "database bad design" (this separate the ms access kings from the poor users).

The real reasons are, is that the query use a lot of function to work on the available data and the PC's we need not work on are not that strong.

Well, like it or not, a query that has run "all weekend long" and still isn't completed kind of points to a major problem in design! It really sounds like our old friend the endless loop is involved.

When did you last Compact & Repair? It is my favorit action after every daily update process.

1. I Compact and Repair frequently.
2. Is is not a matter of design. We need to run in the query a lot of code along functions(). The calculations takes a enormous amount of resource.
3. FYI. The source table is about 2.000.000 mlj records and is well designed.

If you say "The source table is about 2.000.000 mlj records and is well designed." then it is fine by me. If you like to share your functions and let us take a look, or even the SQL of the query, you might get an improvement, or maybe not.
