I have a Suse 9.1 system running on an AMD64 machine with 1Gb of memory and two 160Gb sata hard drives.

About a month ago the system started freezing on startup. After resetting the machine a few times I can eventually get it to load up.

The weird thing is it never freezes at the same point so it's hard to tell where the problem is.

It's not the GRUB bootloader as it always gets past that. I have done a Reiser file system check and it didn't find any problems. I have also used Suse's repair system and again it didn't find any problems.

Lastly I ran hardware diagnostics on the system, and again nothing.

I've kinda run out of ideas and wondered if anyone else has had this problem.

Thanks

Mark

Try booting the system with a SATA-aware boot-CD like Knoppix. See if you can mount the partitions, etc.?

My suspicion is that there's a heat or bad RAM hardware issue. Are your fans running correctly?

i've done a lot of testing over the weekend and even though my diagnostic software says everything is ok the problem seems to be caused by a faulty memory module.

sorry to have wasted your time guys, but thanks for trying to help.

If problem presists, enable SysRQ, and set up a serial console and watch the results from the magic key combos. We had a similar problem and it also turned out to be hardware...

The computer would freeze with varying loads at all times of day and night. After much diagnosing, and twaeking and pruning... We decided to drop in a new motherboard and processor (it's a cluster, we keep spares -- so it was just a "well, we've tried everything else, and we have a few spares, doesn't cost us anything"). Everything has been fine since. The only problem is we don't know if it was the mother board or the CPU.
