system crash on saving to ext. HDD

Hi
I have a new seagate barracuda 7200 80 GB ext hdd. several times while saving files big and small, the whole system crashed. after restarting my computer i found files in the folders i was saving to that were undeletable. can anyone tell me what is happening and how to avoid or correct this?
