Using Solstice Backup 5.1 on a Sun E3500 in conjunction with a Sun L1000 AutoChanger. Was running a full backup when the system crashed (8/4/01). System Administrator rebooted the box and everything came up just fine. Subsequent incremental backups (8/6, 8/7, 8/8, 8/9, 8/10) ran fine but the problem came about when the next full backup was fired off (8/11/01). Solstice wanted a tape from the "full" pool, it unloaded the incremental tape from 8/10 and loaded a tape from the "full" pool, which just happened to be the "full" tape that was in the drive when the system crashed on 8/4/01. Now we get error messages "Aug 11 13:11:08 carmichael root: Solstice Backup media: (warning) /dev/rmt/0mbn moving: fsf 203: I/O error". I've tried giving it another full tape but it won't take it. I've tried "inventoring" the autochanger but it won't let me. Can I just relabel the tape that is giving the I/O error? or should I take someother approach?

This looks like several problems at once. You probably won't be able to relabel the tape if you can not inventory the tape jukebox. What message is returned when you attempt to run an inventory on the jukebox? When the server crashed was the jukebox recycled as well? See if you can place the errent server in another backup group, temporarily, and process a full backup from there, it may opt to use another tape. The I/O error is reporting file corruption on the tape, and more than likely, this tape and the incrementals that occured afterwards, will be useless.
