when i full system backup is requested.. what is actually backed up ?? all ufs filesystems only listed in /etc/vfstab ?? thanks for the help..

or backups in general.. does it matter the tool/software? ? just wonderin what is actually backin up..

Why not look at the netbackup configuration to get your answer? How can anyone answer that for you? Do you want to give remote access to your NetBackup server and then let someone give you your answer?

I think his question is ... what is backed up during a full backup ?

I think the answer is .. all mounted file systems.

This depends on what is in the selection list to be backed up. By simply checking the NetBackup policy, you will see what has been configured in the selections list to be backed up. By default, nothing will get backed up unless you specify it in the selections list.

thanks for the replies.. what i meant to say was.. what really needs to be backed up to qualify as a full system backup.. as mentioned in a reply.. all mounted file systems ??

Surely the only answer is to backup everything you would need to restore the full system exactly as is. Only you will know that based on your system. Sometimes filesystems are only required temporarily and can be mounted/unmounted as required, so there is a possibility that unmounted (at the time) filesystems may need to be backed up too.

Ken,

Barring NFS mounts, why would local file systems not be mounted all the time ?

TIA

In clusters, on the inactive node. Or in the case of refreshes from disks that are usually mounted on a production server, things like that.
