Hi all,

I need a command for make a System backup in a Solaris 2.6 in the forum i can see that ufsdump commnad is the moust powerfull command for this but I have several douts:
1. Is necessary boot the box in Single user mode?
2. If the anwer of the first question is no, is necessary that the file system will be umounted?
3. If possible that a a backup stored in a tape media boot the server in case of a need recovery the system.

Thanks for all.

P.D: Sorry for my english ;-\

Currando,

1. No there's no need to put the machine into single-user, though it is recommended that no users be accessing the system at the time of the backup.

2. No you don't need to unmount the filesystems.

3. No, you can't use the tape as a boot tape unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

KenCunningham,

You don't know any way for restore the system (Only OS) if a crash occured? In NT box I used Norton Ghost but I don't know how I can make a image of boot HD in Solaris box.

I try make a system of backup for restore servers in case of disaster like HD image.

Thanks.

Currando,

I don't know of a Solaris boot disk (but others might). Whenever I've had to restore a system I've always just rebuilt the O/S from the original media - it's not difficult and allows you to make changes if you like. Hope this helps.

I dd my Boot disk to another hard disk (otherwise unused) each night, so that if I have trouble I can boot from the other disk. The one thing you can't give for your heart's desire is your heart. - Lois McMaster Bujold
