Learning Linux and need to know what file without a sysreport shows the detailed hardware information..(par# descriptions etc. Does this give as much detailed info as running ipmitool commands?

I am working on some sun X4100, X4200 systems and just looking to learn different reports and commands. I deal with mostly the hardware side and need to easily identify part#s descriptions.

Thanks

dmidecode would be my first port of call, but it depends very much on the hardware in question and whether or not it records such useful information in the DMI.

thanks.. I have looked into dmidecode also which is useful for some basic info. Seems like ipmitool still gives the most detailed info.
People were trying to compare sysreport to sunexplorer (I would say it is good to a point). Just trying to figure out a single commands to have my customers run instead of requesting multiple outputs.

anyways thanks again Annilannic

why not create a script (perl or just a simple bash script) which you could then transfer to your clients and have them run the script instead, which then gathers all the info you would need into a single file... (just a thought)...

btw. doesn't IPMITOOL only work on hardware that implements the IPMI hardware? meaning that it does not work on mainboards that do not support IPMI...?

BadBigBen. I would need to mess around with the scripting and not alot of spare time. Problem is I would need a command to pull the netmgt IP and have it placed into the ipmitool commands.

I mainly deal with the Sun Xseries boxes which all support ipmi but you may be correct that ipmi does not work on all hardware but I have seen reference to it for other OEMs. With the Sun boxes it is extremely informative(firmware does play a big part however). Gives you sun part#'s for most internal components. It allows us to build our database with customer hardware info so if it is down hard we can look at our database for part#'s and not request customer to open a box. For the Sun Xseries units it is extremely important to have the correct system brd part# do to multiple different cpu's supported.
