Hi,

Does anyone know how to restart the syslog in solaris 7??

Now and again we noticed that the /var/adm/messages logs were not being updated. I have tried to restart the syslogd daemon by typing /etc/init.d/syslogd stop and /etc/init.d/syslogd start ( this didn't work). I tried also to kill -15 <process id of syslogd - this just writes the last messages to the /var/adm/messages log but doesn't seem to update with new messages.

Any suggestions?

this is exactly the best way to do this
If it does not work:
- did you or any other admin change /etc/syslog.conf?
- did you change anything else (installed patches)?

Things you can do:
- stop syslogd and run it in debug/verbose mode (-> man syslogd), this may tell you more if there is a problem
- check status of your patches (get patchdiag tool from Sun etc.)
- open a call if you have an account, afaik Sol7 is still a supported OS

Best Regards, Franz
