My "technical junior" :) has had what is known as "a beast" at 3 different sites he has expanded the sys pool to the maximum amount of disk space left (33gb)... as this is the sys pool\volume what will happen next? will i encounter problems with sys being this size? I believe the pool can't be "shrunk" but because it's sys - a simple delete and re-create i dont think is an option.

i would be greatful for any advice

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

There's a difference between a pool and a volume. A pool can have multiple volumes on it. In and of itself, I don't think there is any problem with having either the SYS pool or the SYS volume this size.

IIRC, pools can be shrunk on the fly with NW6.5.

The size of the volume can be "shrunk" or "expanded" within the pool by setting a volume quota. With a pool, once the pool is set, you can't reduce the size.

Theres nothing wrong with having a 33GB SYS Pool or Volume. I used to have mixed opinions of the best way to setup the NSS pool/volume structure. I've done it two ways:

1) Entire array is a single pool called SYS. All the volumes contained within the SYS pool

2) SYS Pool setup with minimal size (4GB-8GB) and SYS volume in the pool. Second pool called "DATA" that consumes the rest of the disk space. All user data would then be created on various volumes within the DATA pool.

My preference has been to go with option #2, but technically, they both work fine. #2 allows you to take the DATA pool offline for maintenance without taking the server and sys: volume down.

I use (2) as above, mainly because I prefer for my system volumes to be RAID 1 and my data volumes to be RAID 5. There's less reason to do this on netware or linux than there is for windows, but I like to keep my hardware arrangements consistent across platforms.

YMMV.

Option 2 is the way they are already configured. around 5gb is the sys pool... before his "lets go crazy" moment.

Thank u all for your input
