Syntax ewrror in merge field formula

Hi
Can anyone tell me why this would report a Syntax Error ("!Syntax Error") in Word, Merge Fields? It shows in the master doc before I have run the merge... but the calculation shows correctly in the merged result.

{ = {MERGEFIELD Value1 } - {MERGEFIELD Value2} }

How did you insert the {MERGEFIELD } codes? If I use Insert Field Code on the Mail Merge toolbar I see the result for the first record. But if I use Insert and then Field to insert the {MERGEFIELD} codes I get a Syntax error.

Hi
Tks... I can't use the toolbar because I cannot nominate a database (its all driven by a merge function in Visual DataFlex). I tried to test with cut and paste via toolbar method with your suggestion but its no different.
