Hi Everyone,

I've got a bit of an issue and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction on this one.

My configuration is as follows:

I have a network server running Red Hat 9 and SAMBA, which is logged into via PC’s with Windows 2000 and service pack 4 installed. The issue I’m having is with two of the PC’s attached to the network, (mine and my wife’s). I have a shared drive on the server (G: drive) for my wife and I which is intended for installation of the Palm desktop. Both of us have full rights to the G: drive and full admin rights on the W2K PC’s.

In the past my wife had a Palm III, (Win95, just built her a new system) and I had an M505. I installed the Palm desktop from both mine and my wife’s system to the G: drive and we were both able to access the desktop and Hotsync from our respective PC’s. Fast forward to the present. I upgrade to a Tungsten T3 and wipe my M505 and gave it to my wife. I restored my system from a previous image prior the original Palm desktop installation and build her image form scratch so there is no trace of the old Palm desktop files and registry entries. I also deleted the Palm directory on the G: drive.

With the new Tungsten 3 per Palm’s instructions I installed the latest version of the Palm desktop. I installed it to the G:\Palmone with no problems and it Hotsyncs my Tungsten perfectly. I was also able to Hotsync my wife’s M505 from my PC with no problems. I can access our user files on the Palm desktop fine. The next step is to install the Palm desktop to my wife’s PC to the Palmone directory on G: drive. Again the install goes fine. Now is when things go haywire.

When I Hotsync my wife’s Palm it appears to work fine, no error messages. However, when I open the Palm desktop on her PC I get the following error messages Error: Failed to open date book database failed to open address book database etc. Plus the Notepad on the desktop is a white screen with a red X in the top left corner. If I try to create a new memo or anything else on my wife’s desktop and exit it says Error: failed to save xxx database.

If I then try to Hotsync my Tungsten from my PC I get a message that asks “Create a new account on this PC?” but there is already an account as I have run a Hotsync multiple times.

I’m not sure why this doesn’t work. I’ve called Palm, (What a waste), and am waiting for a call back from Level III support, (I guess they figure if they give you enough of a runaround you’ll give up, great devices, but if I provided the kind of IT support they do I’d get canned). I asked level II support about doing a Network Hotsync, but according to Palm that is only if you have a PC with the desktop installed on it and you want to Hotsync your Palm to it from another PC, (sounds like he was describing a peer to peer approach). I explained that I wanted to use a client server approach and was told that Palm doesn't support that type of network functionality, (They have got to be kidding!!).

Also, if I install the desktop locally on my wife’s system it work fine so I know it’s not a problem with her PC.

I apologize for the length of this post but I wanted to be complete. Any help or recommendations (FAQs, HowTo’s etc) would be greatly appreciated.
