Syncing Pocket PC to replicated database

We have an Access 97 database on our network. We want to replicate the database so that we can take a laptop out of the office to make updates. We also want to be able to use our pocket PCs to make updates. However, when you create the replica, it adds an autonumber field to the table that Activesync will not download. Is there a way to use a pda on a replicated database or do I have to write some type of manual replication code? I would appreciate any input.
