Can a user using Outlook 2000, Exchange 5.5 synchronize Outlook using a high speed internet connection instead of a modem when the user is out of the office?
Yes but they need to be able to access the Exchange box from the Internet and resolve the name to the IP address using WINS or DNS. Normally your network will be secured from the Internet using a firewall therefore they will not be able to communicate with the server. There are some workarounds but it depends on your setup.
For example we use Nokia IP firewalls running Checkpoint software and use the Secure Remote portion from Checkpoint running on the firewalls and the Secure remote client on the workstations. This enables the user to be authenticated from the Internet and therefore access the internal exchange servers.
I am not a firewall expert but maybe this will help.
