Hey there guys,

Does anyone if there is a way to configure apt-get/synaptic to use a rawhide repository so I can install OpenOffice 1.1 (and other stuff) 'easily' on RH9?

Yeah, install Debian ;-)

Sorry, I know it's not very useful. I would like to say that having tried Redhat (albeit waaaaay back around 5.x or 6.x), the best way to over come rpm's dependancy pains and get 'apt-get'-like behavior is to use Mandrake and enjoy the use of 'urpmi'. It's like apt-get in that you configure your 'recipes', then just 'urpmi <some package name>' and it does the rest. No convenient configuration stuff like the .deb format offers, but handles all that dependancy stuff well enough.

If you do get apt-get working seamlessly on a Redhat system, I'd like to read how. It would be a good link to send to my 'still using Redhat' buddy that's too d@mned stubborn to switch to Debian or Mandrake, but drools over their package installation sweetness :)

*grin* Believe me, I am holding debian as a 'this-is-where-I'd-like-to-get-to-once-I-know-more-about-linux' kind of thing... :)

I have apt-get working under Rh9 - and using synaptic as well. Check out - it has all the bits you need including instructions.
