Can anyone tell me what if any symptoms I would get if I linked too many hubs to gether?

I am trying to put a linksys 4 -port hub on the end of a cable as I have to add 3 devices in that one area.

I get link lights .

If I connect 1 pc to the line it works fine.

If I connect the line to the new 4 port hub, I get Link lights but my pc's cannot ping anything on the other side of the hub.

They can ping each other (both pc's connected locally to new 4 port hub)

Have I gone one hub too many?

I don;t know for sure, but I think this is only the 2nd hub.

What else might be the problem?

Thanks,

Rich

I guess that it all depends on what is on the other end of the cable. Adding a 4 port hub shouldn't cause you any problems.

If you have a switch at the other end of the cable, it might be set up to prevent hubs being attached to switch ports. I don't know what you have on there but, for example, on a Cisco switch we can prevent users from plugging in hubs to network outlets by setting up the switch port to allow only one MAC address for that port. This means that one PC patched into it will work fine, but multiple PC's on a hub patched into that switch port will not.

You might have a hub on the other end that isn't capable of learing more than one MAC address. Some older hubs don't and again, this prevents you from attaching hubs with multiple PC's.

Without more details it hard to say what it is.

Could it be you need a cross cable between Hub and Switch ?

It sounds like a straight cable from switch hence PC can connect.

Good point chazk1.

I was assuming that the cabling was correct. Still, you never know!!
