Hello All,

I am having a problem performing a tape back-up, I have checked the "Tape Dump" box on the backup path screen but when I try to do the backup I get a message stating "Could not connect to the Nortel Backup Server". The manual states that I should be logged in as NGenSys but my customer does not have a password for this login, we logged in as sysadmin. Does the login used have an effect on the ability to perform a tape backup? If not does anybody have any suggestions? This is my first experience with a Symposium, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Phil

It could be how the server is set to do backups. Are you sure the Server has a Tape backup on it or for that matter a tape in the drive?

The NGenSys login is for the server not the client. sysadmin is the client login where you can initiated a backup providing the device is available or working on the server.

What version od SCCS are you running. Also what PEP level is it at. There was a problem that was fixed in 4.2 with SU12S for backup to a tape bigger then 40 Mb, I think!! not sure on the size part! But I do know that it would fail if you didn't have that PEP and the Tape was too big.

The server has a tape drive that the customer says has been used successfully for a Win2000 backup, I am not sure of the tape size though, I will check. How can I check the PEP level? The system immediately responds with "Nortel Backup Server not found" when I attempt to do the backup, is the system looking for an external location to backup to even though I have the "Dump To Tape" box checked? If so how can I change that? I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Phil

Make sure that the Tape device doesn't require a utility. If it does then the MAS backup and restore service will fail to use the device. I have seen this issue with HP tape drives. They have a backup assistant that runs as a service. Just kill the service (set to disable and stop the service) and try the backup.
