Symbol WS5000 remote management options?

As far as i know, one cannot implement SNMP through a VPN and syslog is merely a "reactive" tool for troubleshooting WS5000 issues. Does anyone have a free/cheap remote management solution for Symbol WS2000/WS5000 switches?
SEMM is just too expensive...

We need to know if a fall over happens (or any other issue happening with the WS at custommer site)in near-realtime.
