Symantec Sued For Running Fake "Scareware" Scans 1

Here is a link to a slashdot article, which in turn references a Forbes article.

Often times when one thinks they may have been infected with malware, the advice is to run a scan, either from a reputable web based tool or download a reputable tool. It looks like Symantec may have gotten greedy and tried taking advantage of this, to their detriment.

invariably report, in an extremely ominous manner, that harmful errors, privacy risks, and other computer problems exist on the user’s PC, regardless of the real condition of the consumer’s computer.

I thought this was the DIFFERENCE between all the fake alert malware pop-ups and real anti-virus software.

The line has been blurred. Way to go crapmantec. This is at least deceptive and at worse no better than the malware producers.
