Hi there,

I'm now working on Symantec's Mail Security for Exchange on my Exch2003 server, anti-virus seems ok, anti-spam seems not that fine.

Say it couldn't help to filing junk mails with wordings like "V1agra" or "v.i.a.g.r.a." or "vi@gr@", well, maybe I didn't set filter rules properly.

Wondering what's the best practice for spam filtering? Can you share some examples here? Many thanks!

The basic sceanrio is to set up a word and give it a score. If the score of the word or combination of words triggers the rule then the email gets dealt with. So Under the Policy/Standard Policy.Content Subpolicy/Content Rule you would set your Threshold to 50 (for example). Then, ensure that all user categories are selected.

Now go to Configuration/Content Dictionary Settings. In there you set up your categories. You can use Both Dictionaries or you can modify a Vendor dictionary and make it a user category. Say you set up your own user category called 'Viagra Mail'. Now under the Add new word section you would enter Language as English/European, Type as User and Category as 'Viagra Mail'. Enter 'Viagra' as the word and give it a score of 50. Do the same for V1agra, v.i.a.g.r.a and vi@gr@.

Save your settings. Go back to the Policy/Standard Policy.Content Subpolicy/Content Rule section and ensure that 'Viagra Mail' on the right is set as enabled.

Make sure your notifications are setup correctly and that's about it. Now send some emails to yourself and see what happens.

It's quite neat that you can set up various words with different levels and only when the combinations total more than your threshold does the rule trigger.
