Hi'ya,

Not sure if it's the right forum, but it's the closest I could find.

Was wondering whether anyone has any experience of using I-Gear? I'm not sure if the same concept applies to other cache/filtering/tracking systems...?

We have a 2 meg connection internet connection. We had a proxy/filter server PIII-500 with 256mb and IDE HDD. The cache size was set to about 1GB. I found that when more users logged on to access the internet, it would slow down to a crawl, and the hard drive would be permanantly inundated with access requests. However, setting the cache to 1mb (minimum allowed) retrieving web pages was instantaneous.

That server died and has since been replaced with a PIV-2000 with 512mb and SCSI HDD. My question is, does anyone think setting the cache back to 1gb will have the same effect. I haven't been able to test this yet, as this is a school environment and is currently closed.

Does a server doing this sort of caching need to be particularly powerful? Is it worth caching pages on-site?
