Hello,

I have a small domain network at home to practice on for my MCSE. I have been given an unused copy of Symantec Corporate AV 8, at the moment I use AVG 7.5 Network edition on the server and AVG free on the three clients...AVG NE has no support for Exchange but does help with Spyware/Adware, not that I use the server for browsing.

Would I be better using the Symantec solution or stay as I am?

Your opinions are welcome.

Thanks,

Dave

Norton does a poor job at getting rid of spyware. It is also a resource hog. Here is what I suggest: go with AVG anti-virus or Avast Antivirus (I have not thoroughly test Avast yet) . You will get all of the free updates you want with both programs. Then, for about 30 bucks (or less), you can get CA Antispyware (formerly known as Etrust PestPatrol), which updates and runs in the background and does the best job at removing ALL spyware. It also has a 3 computer license so you are getting the best protection for your money. Of course, there is always free tools such as Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware. They do a decent job. Don't count on Symantec support because if you happen to run into a compatibility issue and try to contact them, they won't help you.

Thanks for the reply, I will look into your suggestion further :)

Thanks,

Dave

No problem. I have CA Antispyware loaded on my laptop at home. It eliminated a spyware program known as Bonzibuddy, which is apparently tough to get rid of and undetectable by Norton, Ad-aware, and Spybot S & S. It also caught a lot of programs that I thought I had eliminated a couple of years ago (BTW, beware of Gamespy). It has sped up my laptop as well.

With the free version of AVG, you don't get any support and you have to make sure that your 3 users remember to update the program from the menu (since it doesn't update automatically). BTW, Symantec Corporate can be installed on as many PCs as you want (at least the one that I have is set up that way) and it never expires. I have another computer with 512 MB of RAM on it. Norton slows it down way too much. So you have a few drawbacks with each antivirus product. I just don't like Symantec because their support group really pissed me off and their 2006 product crashed my computer.
