I was recently performing a backup with Symantec Backup Exec and it failed to start though that is what i have been using for sometime now. This made it impossible to perform the backup that day. Should this happen again or should the software fail, what should be the next plan?

The plan: post a lot more information about your environment (OS, BE version, backup media/destination any errors in the logs, etc.)
You have given us virtually NOTHING to go on. Sit down and read your post and ask how the information in that post could help us to understand your environment or what might have happened.
