Symantec AVF, AntiSpam Possible problem

Am I interpreting some posts here correctly, in that Symantec AVF does not scan incoming SMTP mail, but only the inboxes they end up in, meaning that virus goes there and is then detected? We have Exchange 2000, Norton Anti Virus and Norton Exchange AVF and Norton Anti-Spam. SMTP mail comes through port 25 which AntiSpam software is listening on and then forwarded to port 26 which is Exchange. Norton Anti Virus constantly comes up and tells us our workstations have a virus on them, which would appear to be a mail virus because it won't allow you to delete it. We paid big bucks to have 'professionals' install and configure and since I am ultimately responsible (which, by the way, I don't seem to making the same big bucks) I just want to make sure we are protected in the end. Any comments/suggestions/thoughts?

Thanks,

Suzanne

If the email (SMTP) get to port 25 on the AntiSpam before it gets to Exchange, then it is checked and you are ok. Only 'clean' messages will get into the mailboxes.

Symantec Mail Security 4.x scans the email before it hits the server.

- From the internet. Messages submitted from MAPI clients won't be scanned by the gateway scanner.

There are three tiers to a typical anti-virus strategy; the gateway, the mail server, and the client. Many organizations scan at all three.
