Symantec 8.0 Liveupdate Anomaly

I have 2 PC's both with XP SP2 and symantec 8.0 AV corprate edition. Same configs etc. On one PC live update runs fine-it connects to http: liveupdates.symantecliveupdates.com. BUT, on the other PC, when liveupdate connects to ftp:update.symantec and aborts. I see a flashed message saying unable to connect to host. Generates Error message LU1814.
I go to symantec knowledge base and do everything that is indicated to resolve this problem..dl new version of LU, close firewall, etc. Still the same error. I switch hard drives from computer 1(which works fine) to the bad computer and it continues to works fine.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled symantec 8.0 and this has still not resolved the problem.

Surely there must be a reason that the other PC is not connecting to the HTTP site but rather aborting when it connects to the FTP site. I have updated the most recent version of LU.

I have this same problem on a laptop. It had version 9 on it. I upgraded to 10.0.2 and the issue persists. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Symantec antivirus and liveupdate. Nothing has worked. The HOSTS file is fine and everything else seems to work on the computer.

When you uninstall, are you manually purging the registry or are you just uninstalling from Control Panel? If you're not purging the registry, when you reinstall you're getting the same settings you had before (therefore the same problem).

Symantec's knowledgebase has articles on how to manually uninstall the various versions. It's a pain (watch those numeric keys!) but it is usually effective.
