markjrees,
I NEVER use one book or source of information for a Cisco exam. I have taken and passed 4 Cisco exams so far.

How do I get ready -

I use Cisco Press books, CBT Nuggets, flash cards and finish with Sybex books and practice tests.

I also have a CCNA/CCNP lab of Cisco 831 and 2500 routers, I have access at work to a test lab of Cisco 2600 routers and I have 6-7 different router sim programs - I think the Cisco Press/Boson is one of the best for the money !!

Here is a link to a free (PDF download) CCNA Lab Book - Learning by Doing: Cisco Certified Network Administrator (CCNA) Lab Manual version 4 volume 2, eBook by Matthew Basham

Matt was my "train the trainer" instructor.

Good luck on you study and exam.

I hope this helps !!!

Yeah, Cisco's done a good job on CCNA. I've known several bright guys who didn't pass CCNA on the first try. For CCNA, I studied both Lammle's latest Sybex guide and Odom's (Cisco Press) two volume set. (I used the two exam approach to CCNA). I took the second exam (811) last week and scored a 934, earning my CCNA.

In addition to reading the three books listed above, I also took all of the Cisco Press practice exams and sims until I was averaging at least 95%.

Perhaps the most important part of my studies was getting my hands on three old 2501 routers. I configured the hell out of them...password recovery, interface/routing protocol config, access lists, the works. For me there's nothing like hands-on to really learn a subject. In retrospect, I think practicing with a single router would have been sufficient for CCNA preparation. It's possible to buy a 2501 for around fifty bucks.

I forgot to mention in my previous post...though I prefer the "more readable" writing style that Lammle uses, his coverage of a few topics wasn't very thorough. On the basis of my recent ICND exam experience, I think that by using Lammle's guide and Odom's ICND guide, most of the needed material is covered.
