I have a problem with Sybase corrupting it`s own indexes for no apparent reason. Has anyone else had this problem and can anyone tell me likely causes, and ways to prevent it. Thanks.

How do you know its a corrupt index? what are the symptoms? what version are you on? Platform? Does the problem occur at an specific interval or after an event (or series of events)?

In general, problems with corruption creeping into a database are either hardware/OS or you might need a patch release (Sybase calls them EBF's--Emergency Bug Fixes) and they're available for download from the Sybase site.

Each EBF release comes with a document called a "cover letter" that describes the fixes in the EBF (and all prior one's going back to the original GA version). If you want to, you can do some searches in the cover letter to see if you can find any mention of your problem.

To verify that it's not a hardware/OS problem, make sure you have the appropriate version of the OS and any required patches for your platform. Sybase has something call "certification reports" or something of the like that gives this information. Hardware problems may show up in disk errors outside Sybase (if you run any other applications) or you might find something with a diagnostic program.

BOL--I hate it when your DB eats its own data!
