sybase date function

i want to retrieve a number of records for a certain period of time excluding the weekends. i understand that sybase does not have a built in function to do this. does anyone have an example of how to create a user defined function to do this? please help! any input would be greatly appreciated

where not(upper(datename(weekday,datefield)) like 'S%')
