SX2000 -> 3300 config tool

Has anyone successfully used a 3rd party(read: non-IIS) ftp server to have a 2000 upload its backup for the purpose of migrating to a 3300?

My company has a group policy requiring user accounts on our laptops to have a minimum of 8 characters, however the default password is 6 characters on a 2000. We're trying to find a way to use a 3rd party ftp server to skirt around this issue, but have been unsuccessful thus far.

Can anyone offer assistance?
