I have 3 extensions that the numbers don't meet our conventions. For example. we use extensions that start with a 7 in one department, and a 2 in another department. BUT 3 of the extensions in our 7 department actually start with a 6. How do I change them. Do I just do it in the phone directory area? Below is an example of what's going on.

6555 should be 7555 as an example.

Our system is the Mitel SX-2000. the extensions in question aren't DID lines I don't believe.

Hello,

This is what the documentation describes:

Move Renumber (MOV REN)
Qualifiers:
<old number> TO <new number>
Purpose:
Changes the extension number of an existing user’s telephone set.
Details:
On the SUPERCONSOLE 1000, this command is found under the SYSTEM group of commands.
Example Entry: MOV REN 3000 TO 3001
System Response:
Operation successful.

This is done from the prompt.

Weird. I went down to the superconsole 1000, and pressed the function button. It then shows stn functions, etc. but I didn't see system.

That's because you need to use the system programming interface to make the change.

OH, ok. I can telnet into that and give it a shot.

Thanks everyone!

Shoot. Ok I typed the MOV REN 6555 to 7555 and pressed enter. but I get an error "The directory number is defined elsewhere."

Any ideas what would cause that?

from maintenance type LOCATE NUMBER 7555
it will indicate if it is already assigned to a set, key or speeddial, etc.
If a key search for it in the Multi Set Key Group form

I did the locate number for both extensions. I get "The number refers to a station" for both numbers.

What it is saying is there is a telephone that is 7555 already. Therefore you can't change 6555 to 7555 without first finding whatever 7555 is and deleting it. Suggest you look in both the single line set form and the multiline set form and search for the 7555 extension. if it isn't there try multiline group form.

As a side note it is a bit restrictive to be defining extensions ranges to department and will consume number range blocks. Just my opinion.

I'd tell you a UDP joke but I'm afraid you won't get it. TCP jokes are the best because you always get them.
