Switching to NTFS from FAT32

If I want to switch from one to the other, what's the chance I lose the data stored on said machine?

Backup your data to another drive or tape drive then do the conversion. You can't save installed application, those you will have to reinstall.

Not true, there are several ways to do this without the loss of data. One is to use Powerquest's Drivecopy 2.x and the other is to use Powerquest's Partition Magic 4.x.<br>

With Drivecopy:<br>

What you are going to want to do is use drivecopy to copy all the contents of the drive to another seperate drive as to make an exact copy. Then format the original drive to the desired File System. When it is finished use Drivecopy once more to copy the contents of the new drive to the old and newly re-formatted drive.<br>

But there is an easier way. Use Partition Magic 4.x<br>

With Partition Magic 4.x the program gives you the option of converting one File System to another on the fly with no loss of data. Both of these programs are available at

and are priced a little high, but sometimes you can find deals by searching for the products at distributor sites and vendor sites.

I would be careful as NT out of the Box does not support Fat32. there are third parth drivers to allow you to access a fat32 partition but haveno idea how the os will support it.
